Group Seeks Input on Local Delivery Cooperative Concept
Public Forum Opens in February 2023

[January 10, 2023]

A public forum on best practices for independent delivery cooperatives will open in February 2023. The forum is sponsored by DeliveryCats Cooperatives, a group working to improve gig delivery options.

A proposed project outline is available on the organization’s website throughout January 2023 for open commentary. Experts, activists, drivers, customers, retail, and restaurant participants are welcome to leave feedback and/or join discussions.

In February the “Round Table” discussion forum will explore each facet of the finalized outline. The first phase of the round table is expected to last 3-6 months and produce a workable template ready for (prototype) field testing.

Via community involvement the project will design and create a two-part system: A “trading post” platform (app) and an organizational template of suggested best practices. With this open-source system potentially any community would be able to create a local delivery network. The project’s motto is “Good customers exist, good drivers exist, let’s get together.”

Development of the app is expected to commence in Summer 2023. Prototype cooperatives are tentatively planned for late 2023 or early 2024, to last 90 days before being released as a first iteration.

Gig delivery exploded in popularity during the 2020 pandemic, the public became aware of the convenience of having anything delivered – or a ride– anywhere, anytime. Major flaws also appeared in the system as behemoth corporations struggled with local logistics. The handful of mega-apps that serve a half-billion consumers worldwide have been slow or absent in addressing these concerns. Lawsuits have consistently been won by consumer advocates but have so far failed to foster institutional change.
